Bluegrass Railroad Museum

Railroad museum and operating collection in Versailles, Kentucky.

The Bluegrass Railroad Museum connects full-size railway preservation with the landscape around Versailles. Its locomotives, passenger cars, freight vehicles and cabooses provide a physical collection, while the excursion railway follows part of a route built to serve the region in the nineteenth century. The result is a museum whose exhibits can be experienced as a working train as well as examined from the ground.

The organization was incorporated in 1976 by enthusiasts whose interests expanded into preserving real railway equipment. It later acquired the historic Louisville Southern right-of-way, originally built in the 1880s between Versailles and the Kentucky River at Tyrone. That corridor is an important exhibit in its own right. A railway’s curves, cuttings and gradients show how builders negotiated the terrain, and they help explain why the route took its particular form.

Preservation work continues to shape the collection. The museum’s history highlights the restoration of Illinois Central Gulf GP8 No. 7738, a project carried out by volunteer mechanics over eighteen months. A diesel locomotive can require substantial historical research and skilled work just as a steam engine does. Its paint scheme, mechanical systems and operating history all help establish what is being preserved.

Smaller exhibits add the passenger perspective. Railway china, for example, recalls an era when companies carried their identities into dining service and presented a train journey as more than transportation. Compare such objects with the passenger coaches outside, then contrast the coaches with the freight cars and cabooses. Different interior arrangements and construction details reflect different users and tasks.

The excursion route passes horse-country scenery, rock cuts and the landscape approaching the river. Those views are part of the regional story rather than an unrelated scenic bonus: the railroad existed to connect people and economic activity across this country. A useful visit combines all three where available, connecting restored machinery with the route it was built to travel.
