Downeast Scenic Railroad — Preservation Collection

Operating railroad preservation collection in Ellsworth, Maine.

The Downeast Scenic Railroad carries passengers over part of the former Maine Central Railroad’s Calais Branch, a route that once connected the Ellsworth area with larger passenger and freight networks. The modern excursion begins at Hancock Station, east of Ellsworth. Vintage coaches and locomotives are the principal exhibits, and a volunteer crew keeps them working on the historic line. Passenger operation returned in 2010 after a half-century absence, according to the railroad’s account.

The route’s earlier passengers included summer visitors traveling toward Bar Harbor. The railroad’s history evokes the prosperous families known in Maine as rusticators, who left cities for seasonal homes on the coast. The Bar Harbor Express belonged to that larger transportation network. Today’s round trip offers a glimpse of the landscape they crossed, although its destination and purpose are those of a local heritage excursion.

Look for the changes in terrain as the train travels through the Ellsworth area. Woods give way to stretches of marsh, and the restored Union River bridge marks a point where the railway had to negotiate a substantial natural barrier. A river crossing tells part of the engineering story that is easy to miss from the road. The alignment, approaches and bridge together reveal how builders kept the track suitable for trains while crossing a varied landscape. The crossing is also a good place to look back along the train.

The published route is approximately twelve miles round trip. Older travel listings sometimes describe a downtown Ellsworth departure, so use the railroad’s current directions to the Hancock boarding platform. The choice of coach and locomotive can vary with the operating schedule. Inside a vintage coach, notice how the windows, seating and steps shape the experience of traveling at railway pace. The preservation collection makes the most sense in motion, where the equipment, bridge and rural surroundings can be understood as parts of one route.
