B&O Ellicott City Station Museum

Historic station and railroad museum in Ellicott City, Maryland.

The stone station at Ellicott City stands at the far end of the first thirteen miles of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Howard County identifies it as the oldest surviving railway station in the United States. Its scale offers a close view of the railroad’s earliest ambitions. The company was founded in 1827 to develop a route from Baltimore toward the Ohio River. Its initial service reached the community then known as Ellicott’s Mills, providing a practical test of a new transportation enterprise.

Passengers began riding from Baltimore in 1830. The first cars on the route used horses for power, so the station belongs to the period in which a railroad did not necessarily mean a steam locomotive. The B&O demonstrated steam traction that same year. Changing the source of power affected far more than speed. The railway had to adapt the equipment and work around the route, including how it managed movements, maintained vehicles and supplied its engines.

The station also witnessed later phases of railroad history. The restoration undertaken in 1999 returned the building to its 1857 appearance, according to the American Battlefield Trust. Keep that date in mind as you examine the rooms and exterior. The station’s first years and the period represented by the restored building are distinct stages of the story. Its preservation as a museum lets visitors compare what was needed when the railway began with the more developed facilities of a later era.

Look for the relationship between the station and the historic town. The building was a point of exchange between an established community and a transportation system still extending its reach. Passenger service, goods and the movement of information all helped draw a town into a larger network. Changing exhibitions and educational programs add context for that development. Use Howard County’s visitor page for directions and current access. The museum makes a natural companion to Baltimore’s Mount Clare complex, where the other end of the early route and the B&O’s later industrial scale come into view.
