Visitor status: Seasonal Lenox museum. Excursions board in Adams
The Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum has two distinct public settings. Its Lenox museum occupies a restored New Haven Railroad depot dating from 1903, with exhibits, equipment and a restoration facility nearby. The group’s longer train excursions board in Adams. That distinction matters when planning a trip, and it also reflects two sides of the collection. Lenox interprets a historic station and the work carried out around it. Adams provides a place to experience vintage equipment on a longer ride.
The nonprofit began in 1984 and depends on volunteers. In Lenox, tours and artifacts explain railroad operations in the Berkshire Hills. Yokun Station, a replica block station, introduces the people and equipment involved in controlling movements along a route. A block divided the railway into sections so that trains could be managed safely. The station gives that abstract idea a working space, where someone could receive and pass on information as trains approached.
The equipment collection includes early diesel locomotives and New Haven Rail Diesel Car No. 42, known as Firestone, which the museum identifies as a restoration project. A self-propelled railcar offered a way to provide passenger service without a separate locomotive and train of coaches. Compare that arrangement with a conventional train, then ask about the different work needed to maintain the two kinds of equipment.
The Lenox Jitney, when offered, is a brief demonstration shuttle between the station and the yard. The operator publishes a separate calendar for the Adams excursion. Its current Lenox page says the station museum’s 2026 season has ended and gives Memorial Day weekend 2027 as the planned reopening. For a station-focused day, start with the depot and block station, then look at how the yard, equipment and shop fit around them. The physical layout helps explain what volunteers need to keep a collection available to the public.
