Greenwood Railroad Historical Center

Railroad museum and passenger-car collection in Greenwood, South Carolina.

The Railroad Historical Center in Greenwood grew from a private collection established in 1970 behind an Adams family property. The family donated the land and equipment to the Museum of Greenwood in 2005. That transfer gave the full-size vehicles a lasting public role. The collection concentrates on the decades when steam locomotives and railway passenger cars served many different kinds of travel, from everyday journeys to the work of executives and long-distance sleeping-car passengers.

The 1906 Baldwin steam locomotive No. 19 is a natural starting point. Its position at the head of the display helps set the scale for the cars that follow. Guided interpretation explains where an engine worked and why it was built to suit a particular assignment. Look at the relationship between the boiler, wheels and tender. A locomotive had to carry and use fuel and water while pulling vehicles whose size and weight could vary considerably from one job to another.

The passenger collection has examples that make it possible to compare interiors. Seaboard coach No. 831 dates from the streamlined era of the 1930s. The Pullman sleeping car American Liberty shows the spaces in which passengers spent the night. The business car Carolina reflects another role for a railway vehicle, providing working and traveling accommodations for officials. A coach, sleeper and business car could run on similar tracks while their interiors answered markedly different needs.

The center uses guided tours to interpret the vehicles. Look beyond the exterior colors and lettering to details that affected how people traveled, including the space available for seats, berths, service and the employees responsible for them. The preservation effort keeps those separate experiences together in one place. It lets visitors compare what a railway promised to different passengers with the practical design of the vehicles that carried them.
