Cleburne Railroad Museum

Railroad and community history museum in Cleburne, Texas.

Cleburne’s railroad museum follows a town whose connection to the Santa Fe became a source of work for generations. Johnson County’s historical commission records that more than a thousand spectators turned out when the first railroad arrived on October 21, 1881. The relationship changed in the late 1890s, when the Santa Fe chose Cleburne for a major shop complex. Where the first train had brought a crowd to watch, the new shops gave residents daily work keeping the railroad’s locomotives and cars in service.

The term backshop points to the scale of that work. Routine attention could take place at an engine terminal, but an extensive overhaul meant bringing equipment into a shop equipped to dismantle and rebuild it. Cleburne’s shop crews eventually took on projects such as the CF7, turning older Santa Fe F-unit diesel locomotives into a road-switcher configuration. The program illustrates the value of shop knowledge during the diesel era. A locomotive that had served one purpose could supply the foundation for a machine better suited to another assignment.

The shops closed in 1989. The city museum preserves their story through exhibits about the people and businesses tied to the railroad. In historic shop photographs, look for the repeated tracks and large door openings. Each track was a way to bring equipment to a particular work area, and the arrangement gives an idea of how many tasks an overhaul could involve. The city’s museum information also points visitors toward sites around town, extending the story past the exhibition room.

The Santa Fe was the biggest presence, but the museum’s local setting leaves room for smaller companies in Cleburne’s history. The Dallas, Cleburne and Southwestern, sometimes called Old Betsy, intended to reach Dallas. In 1903 its investors finished about nine miles to Egan, where the line met the Katy. The little railroad had its own Cleburne terminal on East Chambers Street and ended service in 1923. Its short reach is a reminder of how differently the town’s railroad ventures turned out.
