Herndon Depot Museum

Depot and local history museum in Herndon, Virginia.

Herndon Depot is a reminder that the Washington suburbs were once a landscape of small railway towns, farms and dairies. The modest board-and-batten station was in existence by 1857, serving the Alexandria, Loudoun & Hampshire Railroad. Its importance came from what passed through it: commuters traveling toward the capital and agricultural products moving into the same urban market. The museum therefore tells a story about the relationship between countryside and city, as well as the trains themselves.

The building also had a civic life. After Herndon was incorporated in 1879, the first town council meetings took place in the depot. That is an especially revealing detail: a station could be the community’s transport office, meeting place and most recognizable public landmark. Rail service ended in the 1960s, but the building survived through reuse, including a period housing town offices. Its later restoration and museum role kept it at the center of Herndon rather than leaving it as a forgotten industrial remnant.

One of the richest things to explore is the J. Berkley Green photograph collection. The historical society describes more than 200 copied images, arranged in seven binders, showing Herndon and the surrounding area from around the beginning of the twentieth century into the mid-1960s. Subjects include railroad scenes, businesses, churches, streets and the destructive fire of 1917. The collection’s journey is a story in itself: Green once displayed the pictures in the front parlors of his funeral home before they became a museum resource.

Look for connections between the photographs and the town outside. A station view or street scene becomes much more interesting when you can compare the roofline, street alignment or neighboring buildings with what survives today. The depot stands beside the former railway corridor now used by the Washington & Old Dominion trail, offering another visible layer of transport history. The attraction’s appeal is intimate rather than monumental: it helps explain how a small station supported everyday work, food distribution and the emergence of a community.
