West Virginia Railroad Museum

Railroad history museum in Elkins, West Virginia.

The West Virginia Railroad Museum in Elkins uses a former industrial building to explore a state whose communities and industries were profoundly shaped by rail transportation. Its home is Darden Mill, built in 1902 on land purchased from the West Virginia Central & Pittsburg Railway. The building worked as a grain mill until 1943 and later served several other businesses before restoration gave it a museum role. Its setting beside the tracks makes the relationship between railway and local industry immediately relevant.

The museum’s roots extend beyond the exhibition space. When the organization was established in 2003, its founders concentrated on collecting and restoring railway vehicles. Published project records identify steam and diesel locomotives, cabooses, a wooden refrigerator car and other rolling stock. That broader preservation collection should not be mistaken for a promise that every vehicle is displayed at Darden Mill. It demonstrates the range of work behind the institution, from protecting documents and small objects to caring for machinery of an entirely different scale.

Exhibition history reveals a museum interested in people and change as well as equipment. Previous displays have examined the Chesapeake & Ohio in West Virginia, coal and the railroad, and a comparison of railway life in the 1920s and 2020s. The latter paired historical images and artifacts with contemporary photographs by Dr. Frederick J. Ripley. Those subjects show how the museum can connect a familiar rail scene with larger questions about technology, employment, communities and the industries that sustained a route. Exhibitions rotate, so historical titles are useful examples of its approach rather than a current gallery list.

Look for the links between the building and the subjects being interpreted. A grain mill close to a railway, a photograph of a coal operation and a railroad document all describe different parts of the same industrial network. The museum’s Elkins location also complements the town’s surviving railway setting, but nearby tourist-train departures do not establish museum opening times. Published visitor information contains differing seasonal arrangements, including group visits by appointment. Contact the museum directly for the present exhibition and access before planning a trip specifically around the galleries.
