California is the deepest state bench in the West, and this region is mostly its story: the Napa Valley Wine Train's rolling restaurant, Roaring Camp's redwood steam, the Skunk Train's two stub operations (its through route honestly noted as cut), Railtown 1897's Gold Country trips, Sacramento's museum trains, and Niles Canyon's Train of Lights.
Washington and Oregon add steam of their own — Mt. Rainier Scenic, back in operation after a closure and museum rescue; Chehalis-Centralia, currently diesel-hauled while its steam locomotive is repaired and labelled so; the Oregon Coast Scenic; and Sumpter Valley's narrow gauge. One honest note: Idaho has no operating full-size scenic railway in this directory — its last excursion line closed in 2016.
