Ridgway Railroad Museum tells the story of narrow-gauge railways through the equipment and geography of Ouray County. The town was closely associated with the Rio Grande Southern, which connected communities across difficult southwestern Colorado terrain. The museum’s outdoor setting makes it possible to consider how much railway infrastructure belonged to a small town. A depot, yard and vehicles all had jobs to perform in a transport network serving people and businesses at considerable distances from one another.
The museum’s equipment gives visitors a view of work beyond scheduled passenger service. Smaller vehicles associated with railway maintenance and the handling of freight can be especially instructive. Their dimensions make sense in relation to the narrow track and the local assignments for which they were used. Examining a piece of equipment at ground level helps explain why a railway collection benefits from preserving practical objects alongside its best-known engines.
The museum’s stated mission extends to a reference library, publications and educational work. That is significant in a community where the railway itself changed considerably over time. Photographs, drawings and accounts help place surviving objects in a network that cannot be reconstructed from a single yard. They also give researchers a way to ask who used particular equipment, what it carried and how the town changed as different services came and went.
Ridgway has a separate ranch history museum in the historic depot. Its proximity gives visitors an opportunity to explore two related accounts of regional life. Ranching and rail transportation belonged to the same landscape, and each museum focuses on different parts of that history. The railway museum’s own outdoor exhibits are located near the depot, with additional displays and work taking place at its museum site on North Railroad Street.
Use the railway museum’s exhibit and contact pages to plan a visit around the displays you want to see. Volunteer work sessions and public access can overlap at particular times, while the adjacent historic depot has its own operator.
