Boca Express Train Museum

Historic depot and passenger-car collection in Boca Raton, Florida.

Visitor status: Former museum; depot sold for event use

Boca Raton’s former Florida East Coast Railway depot recalls the years when the railroad and the resort business developed together. Clarence Geist, the second owner of the hotel that became the Boca Raton Club, commissioned the station in 1929. The Florida East Coast Railway designed and built it, and it opened in 1930 in time to welcome guests bound for the club. The depot’s origins connect an apparently modest railway building with a much larger plan for the town’s growth as a destination.

Guests arriving by train entered a community whose railway history went back beyond the resort. The Boca Raton Historical Society’s pioneer exhibits describe the influence of Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway on agriculture and settlement. These connections make the depot a place to consider how the same railway could support farm shipments, the everyday movements of residents and the ambitions of developers. A passenger arriving for a holiday used infrastructure that belonged to the life of a working town.

The station continued operating until the mid-1960s. By the 1980s, it needed substantial attention. The Boca Raton Historical Society acquired and restored it with assistance from the local redevelopment agency. The property subsequently housed the Boca Express Train Museum. The depot and two railcars have received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places and on Boca Raton’s historic register, reflecting the importance of both the building and the equipment preserved with it.

The property entered a new phase after the historical society sold it. A January 2025 preservation report identified the new owners and described their intention to use the former depot for small events and performances. The report traced the building’s changing role from arrival point to museum, community space and event venue. For more about the railway’s earlier impact on the town, the historical society’s Pioneer Era exhibition places the line alongside agriculture, settlement and the lives of Boca Raton families.
