The Naples Depot Museum occupies a restored Seaboard Air Line Railway passenger station from the era when rail connections helped reshape Florida’s Gulf Coast. Collier County’s interpretation points to a particularly striking episode in the 1920s. Two competing railroads arrived in Naples within ten days of one another. The competition gives visitors a sense of how quickly the prospects of a small community could change once railway companies saw a market for travel and trade.
Begin with the depot as a piece of evidence. A passenger station represented an investment in regular journeys, with places for people and baggage to move between the town and the train. The building also greeted visitors forming their first impression of Naples. The museum’s account of the town’s growth connects the railway with the development of a Gulf Coast resort, where access to visitors and supplies mattered alongside the landscape that drew people there.
Restored railcars form part of the collection. They sit within a broader account of the ways people traveled and worked in southwest Florida. Seminole dugout canoes, a mule wagon and a swamp buggy give visitors comparisons with the railway. Each vehicle was suited to particular ground or water conditions and to a different kind of journey. Seeing them in the same museum makes it easier to understand why improved connections required several forms of transport.
The depot also gives the county a place to bring temporary railway history subjects into view. One 2026 exhibition examines the Railroad Bracero Project, which brought Mexican workers into railway maintenance during World War II. The subject shifts attention from passenger travel to the workforce that kept tracks usable under wartime demands. The museum’s exhibition calendar gives the dates for such temporary displays.
The station and railcars provide the core railway experience, and the transportation displays connect them with the surrounding region.
