Heritage Station Museum occupies the depot built in Douglas in 1905 by the Wadley & Mount Vernon Railroad. The Georgia & Florida Railroad established its presence in town two years later and became an important employer in the area. Those dates help explain why the station belongs in a museum of Coffee County. Its railway business was tied to the development of the city and to jobs that supported local families over several generations.
The depot’s working history extended beyond the age of passenger trains. Douglas ended passenger service in 1949, and the building remained in railway use into the mid-1980s. Stations could continue handling other kinds of business after people stopped boarding trains there. Look at the building with those different periods in mind. It served a community whose needs changed, and the end of one activity left room for other uses of the railway property.
The building’s preservation drew on people with a direct connection to the railway. Georgia & Florida employees worked with the city and Friends of the Museum on its restoration. In 1999, the depot took on a public role as Heritage Station Museum. The involvement of railway employees ties the preservation effort to the same industry whose history is presented inside. A local museum can retain records and memories that would otherwise become separated from the place where the work took place.
The museum gives railway history a substantial place in a broader collection on Coffee County. Local business, agriculture, military history and African American history all have space in the galleries. Their proximity offers a way to consider how railway employment and transportation fitted into the wider community. Train memorabilia gives the story a direct connection to the people and companies that worked at the depot.
Plan to explore the building as well as the exhibits. Its location in Douglas makes the relationship between station and community visible from outside. The Coffee County Historical Society operates the museum with volunteers, and the city recommends calling ahead to confirm opening or arrange a guided visit.
