Five railroads used Albany’s Union Depot after it opened in 1913. Today the former station houses the history museum at Thronateeska Heritage Center, and the campus includes a railcar display. The building gives visitors a place to consider what it meant for several railroads to come together in one city. Passengers could use the same station while continuing their journeys on different lines, and the depot became a visible point of connection between Albany and places farther away.
Heritage Plaza occupies Albany’s surviving brick street. That setting makes the railway history easier to picture, because the approach to a depot was part of the trip. Streets brought passengers and their luggage to the building before the railroad carried them onward. The surrounding campus gives visitors a chance to look at the station from several angles and trace the relationship between the railway property and the streets of the city.
Thronateeska took shape in 1974 when local residents worked to revitalize the old depot area. The Southwest Georgia Historical Society and the Albany Junior Museum joined forces in the foundation. The Union Station building gained National Register recognition in 1975. Its adaptation as a history museum provided a home for changing exhibitions and kept the former passenger building connected to a public use in downtown Albany.
Railway architecture also appears in a newer part of the site. The science museum and planetarium building, completed in 2008, incorporates architectural features from the former 1926 Central Georgia roundhouse into its facade. The roundhouse belonged to the servicing side of railway work. Its features give visitors another point of reference after seeing the passenger depot, where the design served a different group of people and tasks.
Start with the history museum, the station building and the railcar display for the most direct railway experience. The center’s wider campus offers other subjects, including a collection of historic surveying and mapping equipment.
