Nampa Train Depot Museum

Depot and local history museum in Nampa, Idaho.

The Nampa Train Depot Museum sits on Front Street in an Oregon Short Line station designed in 1903 by Frederick W. Clarke of Omaha. Its pressed brick and sandstone give the building a much more formal appearance than its predecessor, a wooden station brought in from King Hill. Nampa had grown into a busy junction by the time the new depot opened. The substantial replacement gives a sense of the importance the railroad attached to this stop and of what the town had become within two decades of the arrival of the tracks.

The Oregon Short Line ran west across southern Idaho and initially bypassed Boise. The Idaho Central Railway opened a connection between Boise and the main line at Nampa in 1887. The Idaho Northern and the Boise, Nampa and Owyhee also met the Oregon Short Line here. A traveler transferring between trains would have experienced Nampa as a gateway. For local businesses, the same network provided several directions in which goods could move. The station makes more sense when you see it as a junction in that network.

Stand far enough back to see how the roof, bays and masonry details work together. The National Register documentation identifies the design as an Idaho example of the Baroque Revival. Much of the interest is in the contrast of the brick and sandstone and the shape of the building above the platform. The depot survived the changes that brought a newer passenger station to Nampa in the 1920s. Railroad offices occupied the older building before it passed to the Canyon County Historical Society in 1972.

The museum uses the station to tell the history of both the railroad and the community it helped shape. Look at local photographs and objects with the junction story in mind. A hotel artifact, a street scene or an old business photograph can show the trade that grew up around regular train service. Outside, the relation of the depot to the tracks and the Front Street buildings gives those objects a setting.
