Hub City Heritage Railway Museum

Railroad museum and equipment collection in Oelwein, Iowa.

Oelwein’s Hub City Heritage Railway Museum preserves the railroad identity of a town whose name became closely associated with railway employment and activity. The collection is based in historic railroad working buildings, including an express building and yard office, with locomotives and cabooses adding an outdoor equipment element. Those surroundings make the museum more than a display of memorabilia: they give the objects a setting connected with the organization of a railway town.

The preservation effort began on June 14, 1987. Bill Mundt guided the museum for many years, until his death in 2020, and a new board took responsibility in 2023. That continuity of local effort matters. Railway collections often survive because individual residents recognize the significance of objects and buildings that might otherwise disappear when an industry changes. The museum is therefore also a record of Oelwein’s determination to retain evidence of its working past.

The museum’s stated interests include the Chicago Great Western, Rock Island, Chicago & North Western, Iowa Northern and Canadian National. The range helps explain why a town’s railway history cannot always be reduced to one company name. Mergers, successor operators and changing routes can alter the identity of a line while familiar tracks, jobs and structures remain. Compare company names in the exhibits to understand those layers rather than assuming every object dates from the same period.

The old yard office and express building provide two useful viewpoints. A yard was the place where railway vehicles and traffic had to be organized, while express service moved smaller, time-sensitive consignments. Cabooses and engines outside extend those subjects into the train itself. Ask which equipment can be toured, and use the artifacts to connect the administrative work inside the buildings with the physical work carried out around the tracks.

Local descriptions also associate the museum with Oelwein’s heritage celebrations and Railroad Days. Such events can provide additional interpretation, but regular museum opening and equipment access should be checked separately. It is a focused destination for visitors interested in railway communities, particularly the people and facilities that kept a regional transport network functioning.
