In Duluth the railway museum has a collection large enough to fill the working spaces of a former terminal. The Lake Superior Railroad Museum uses the platforms and yard of the 1892 Union Depot, now part of the St. Louis County Depot. The passenger station above and the trains below make an unusually complete pairing. You can see where passengers entered the system and then go down to the level of the couplers and wheels, where the size of the equipment is most apparent.
A passenger platform is a useful place to look at railway engineering. From beside a car you can see how its weight rests on the wheel assemblies and how the floor stands well above the rail. From the end you can look at the hardware that lets two cars travel together. That gives you a practical way into this collection, which includes both the equipment passengers would have recognized and the large freight machines essential to the port’s business.
Two particularly revealing collection pieces are the William Crooks and the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Yellowstone No. 227. Compare the little pioneer locomotive with the articulated engine built for heavy ore service. The wheel arrangements make the comparison visible from platform level, while the jobs for which they were designed explain the change in scale. The later locomotive is a way to connect Duluth’s trains with the movement of ore from the Iron Range to the head of the lakes.
The museum began as a local project in 1973 and developed around the rail history of the Lake Superior region. There is ample indoor space, useful if you want time to read the equipment labels or study a locomotive from several angles. The affiliated North Shore Scenic Railroad also departs from the Depot. The standing collection is the part to prioritize if you want to spend time comparing equipment, and the excursion is a separate way to see the railroad corridor from a passenger seat.
