Belton Grandview and Kansas City Railroad Museum

Operating railroad museum in Belton, Missouri.

The Belton Grandview and Kansas City Railroad uses a surviving stretch of the old St. Louis–San Francisco Railway south of Kansas City. The railroad calls it part of the Blair Line, also known as the High Line. The route dates to the late nineteenth century and remained in railroad use into the mid-1980s. Its present scale can make that history easy to overlook. The preserved tracks once belonged to a longer corridor whose trains connected Belton with other communities and the wider Frisco system.

The preservation effort also has a history of moving around the Kansas City area. The Smoky Hill group formed in 1964 in Lenexa, Kansas, and set up a railroad museum in the former Kansas City Southern Third Street Yard in Kansas City, Missouri, in the early 1970s. Two of its railcars were used by a news outlet during the 1976 Republican National Convention. That unexpected assignment is a reminder that a railroad car can become a usable room once its traveling days are over.

When the yard was needed for railroad traffic, the organization had to disperse its equipment. Much of it went to the fuel tracks at Richards-Gebauer Air Force Base, which had closed for active-duty use. A rail vehicle takes a specialized site to store and display. The sequence from a freight yard to military property and then to a heritage railroad is a good illustration of how much preservation can depend on finding enough track in the right place.

At Belton, look for the names on cars and locomotives and distinguish them from the railroad name associated with the route. A heritage fleet can bring together equipment with several working histories even when the rails beneath it have one local story. The operator runs scheduled excursions on its segment of the line. Consult its calendar if you want to see the equipment in motion, since a published trip gives you a specific departure and date.
