The Sumpter Valley Railway runs over track that preservation volunteers laid themselves. The group organized in 1971 and leased part of the former right-of-way from the Edward Hines Lumber Company. The land west of McEwen retained the shape of the old railroad, but the volunteers still had to turn that corridor into an operating railway. The route between McEwen and Sumpter is one of the largest artifacts the group has recovered.
Rail service once connected the region’s mining and timber operations to Baker City. Heavy equipment and supplies could reach districts where moving such loads by road was difficult. The surviving gold dredge near Sumpter Station gives that history a physical scale. Consider what was needed to assemble, supply and repair machinery that large in a mountain valley. The railroad’s place in the local economy becomes easier to understand alongside the industrial equipment it helped make possible.
The volunteers also needed an engine. In June 1976, a restored Heisler steam locomotive moved under its own power onto a low trailer for the road trip from Baker to the rebuilt railway. The geared Heisler design distributes power through shafts running along the engine. Its arrangement suited timber lines with curves, steep grades and track that could shift as the work moved through the forest. The trip by trailer shows how much planning the preservation of an individual engine can require before it even reaches its new track.
The restoration effort also recovered locomotives Nos. 19 and 20 and a rotary snowplow in the 1970s. A plow of this kind used rotating blades to clear deep snow, making it as important to some winter operations as the engine hauling freight. The range of equipment helps visitors imagine the problems crews faced over the course of a year. At Sumpter, leave time to look at the railway and the surviving mining landscape together.
