Northern Pacific Railway Museum

Depot and railroad history museum in Toppenish, Washington.

The Northern Pacific Railway Museum at Toppenish preserves the identity of a particular railroad in a station that once served the surrounding community. The 1911 depot anchors a collection of railway artifacts and full-size equipment, giving the museum a different character from a broad transportation exhibition. Here, the company name on a locomotive, document or passenger car helps connect individual objects with one railway’s routes, employees and working traditions across the Northwest.

A major recent chapter is the restoration of Northern Pacific steam locomotive No. 1364. Built by Baldwin in 1902, the 4-6-0 spent decades out of service before volunteers brought it back to steam. Specialist reporting documented its return to movement under its own power in February 2026, and the Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association advertised operating appearances in its 2026 Toppenish convention program. That recovery makes the engine more than a static survivor: it represents years of practical preservation work reaching a visible milestone.

The locomotive’s route into preservation is interesting in its own right. Historical reporting records its donation for park display in Tacoma in 1954, its move to Toppenish in 1994 and the later use of the museum’s freight house as an engine house during restoration. A building originally concerned with moving goods therefore gained a new role caring for a historic locomotive. The story illustrates why successful restoration often requires adaptable buildings and long-term local support as much as mechanical skill.

The wider Northern Pacific collection includes another steam locomotive, No. 2152, along with passenger and freight equipment. Compare a passenger-car interior with the working machinery of a locomotive and the station’s original spaces: all belonged to the same transport system but served very different needs. The historical association’s special-event program has included car walk-throughs, photographic opportunities and caboose activity, but those arrangements should not be assumed on an ordinary museum day. 1364 in operation or entering particular cars is important to your visit.
