Colfax Railroad Museum
The Colfax Railroad Museum preserves equipment from railroads that served western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota. That regional focus makes the collection useful for understanding the rail networks behind local communities and industries. The museum’s depot history and growing equipment holdings provide both an architectural and mechanical perspective on railway preservation. Visitors interested in a particular railroad or vehicle should check the current roster and access arrangements, since collection growth does not mean every exhibit is always available to enter.

The Fennimore Railroad Historical Society Museum is housed in a former city power-house and utility building. Its local railway story is associated with the Dinky, giving the collection a distinctive regional identity rather than a broad national subject. The industrial building adds another layer to the visit by connecting public utilities and railway heritage.

La Crosse’s Copeland Park display preserves Burlington steam locomotive No. 4000, a Milwaukee Road caboose and the Grand Crossing signal tower. The locomotive was once streamlined and nicknamed Big Alice the Goon by railway crews. The tower adds a valuable operating-history dimension: it controlled a crossing used by several railroads and was preserved after its closure in 1991. Together the objects explain passenger power, train crews and the control of railway movements.

Spooner’s Railroad Memories Museum occupies the old Omaha/Chicago & North Western depot. Its extensive railroad memorabilia collection explains the railway’s importance to the community and preserves the smaller objects that can disappear when attention is focused only on locomotives. The station setting gives those artifacts a useful historical context. It is a strong choice for visitors interested in railway work, signs, tools and the material culture of a Wisconsin railroad town.
