Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad

Living-history village with operating heritage railway in Flint, Michigan.

Crossroads Village brings together historic buildings from the Flint and Genesee County area, with the Huckleberry Railroad running alongside the assembled community. The attraction opened in 1976 as part of the United States bicentennial celebrations. Buildings moved to the site include structures for work, worship, education and entertainment. The railway helps visitors see how transportation fitted into that world, where people depended on connections among farms, shops and growing towns.

The train operates on a narrow-gauge railway, but the equipment has histories extending far beyond Michigan. One steam locomotive, now numbered 152 and formerly No. 2 here, was built by Baldwin in 1920 for the Alaska Engineering Commission. The county park’s history traces its restoration and entry into Huckleberry service in 1976. That history gives visitors a way to connect the engine with two very different landscapes, its first working environment and its later life carrying passengers in a Michigan park.

The historic station is part of the village’s broader preservation story. An old depot brought from Davison gives passengers a setting for boarding and waiting. Elsewhere in the village, buildings such as the one-room schoolhouse and sawmill help establish the range of activities a local railway might support. Look at the town and the train together. A journey by rail began before the platform and ended wherever the traveler or goods were headed after arrival.

Ask which locomotive is assigned to the train. The park uses different engines, including diesel power, and equipment availability can change. On the ride, pay attention to the change from village buildings to the surrounding woods and wetlands. The railway offers another viewpoint on the reconstructed setting, with the pace and scale of the train giving time to notice the landscape around it.
