Southern Michigan Railroad Society

Operating railroad museum in Clinton, Michigan.

The Southern Michigan Railroad Society preserves part of the Clinton Branch, a line that once reached from Lenawee Junction toward Jackson. The route’s roots go back to the Palmyra & Jacksonburgh Railroad of the 1830s. The society describes it as Michigan’s first branch line, a distinction that places this modest stretch of track near the beginning of the state’s railroad story. The surviving corridor connects Clinton and Tecumseh with the industries and communities it served for generations.

The final freight operator, Conrail, discontinued service as business declined. The society formed in 1982 to save the line and make it an operating museum. The US 12 Heritage Trail account credits three Clinton high school students, Dale Pape, John Shaw and Jeff Dobek, with helping launch the effort. Their project turned the impending loss of a railway into a local undertaking. Volunteers eventually began operating the preserved line in the mid-1980s.

The track itself is one of the most informative exhibits. An old branch line shows how the railway reached places whose traffic seldom justified the facilities of a mainline terminal. The route crosses the River Raisin in the countryside near Clinton and Tecumseh. Look at the approaches to the crossings and the grade on either side. The engineers who established the route had to fit the tracks into that landscape while keeping them usable for freight traffic.

During an excursion, the changes from town to open countryside help explain the geography of the original branch. Consider what happened after a freight car reached a local destination and how it would have been returned to a connection with the wider network. The society uses historic equipment and artifacts to interpret the branch’s operating years and its preservation. The route and equipment together show why saving a length of track mattered as much as finding a place to store the vehicles.
