The Harlowton Milwaukee Depot Museum stands at what was once a turning point in a transcontinental railroad. In Harlowton, Montana, the Milwaukee Road’s electrified Rocky Mountain district began. From here the electrified route ran west to Avery, Idaho. For the town, that boundary brought work for people who maintained the equipment and got trains ready for a different kind of territory. For a visitor, it explains why an electric locomotive is one of Harlowton’s most distinctive surviving pieces of railroad history.
The 1908 depot was built to a Milwaukee Road Standard Class A passenger station plan. Standardization helped a railroad construct a recognizable family of buildings along an expanding line. The town’s name has a connection to an earlier company. In 1900 residents chose Harlowton in honor of Richard Harlow of the Montana Railroad. The depot and its collection trace the era in which the Milwaukee Road subsequently made the town an important point on its western line.
Look for electric boxcab E57B at the corner of US 12 and Central Avenue. Its box-shaped body is an unusually clear departure from the outlines of a steam locomotive. Electrical power came from infrastructure built along the railroad. The machine and the town’s maintenance facilities therefore belonged to the same system, even though one moved and the other stood still. The locomotive display is a separate stop from the depot, so allow time for both if electrification is your main interest.
Passenger service ended in 1961 and the Milwaukee Road abandoned the depot and yard in 1980. The restored station puts the local consequences of those dates beside the larger story of expansion to the Pacific. At the museum, look for equipment and records that explain what employees actually did at the division point. Then see the electric locomotive and consider how much work was required in the town to keep a train moving into the mountains.
