Livingston Depot Center

Depot and railroad history museum in Livingston, Montana.

Look up when you enter the Livingston Depot Center. High in the former Northern Pacific station, the railroad’s circular monad emblem appears in mosaic above the tall windows. The restored 1902 depot also retains original masonry, decorative details and surfaces such as tile and terrazzo. This was a building intended to make an impression on arriving travelers. Outside, the colonnades give it a second scale, where someone approaching a door on foot can see individual ornaments as well as the sweep of the station.

Livingston was the headquarters of the Northern Pacific’s Central Division and a gateway for train travelers headed to Yellowstone National Park. The combination helps explain the investment in the depot. Railroad operations needed a division base, and tourists needed a place to make the transition from a long-distance train to the next stage of the journey. From the station you can imagine a vacation organized around connections, timetables and luggage before an automobile could take a visitor directly into the park.

The restored station is now an exhibition space with programming in regional art, history and culture. The subject of an individual show can change, but the railroad’s design is present in every season. For a railway-focused visit, spend time in the former passenger space, then go around the exterior to see where the colonnades and courtyard sit in relation to the main room. The decorative animal heads and the railroad’s own emblem are details worth spotting before leaving.

Livingston’s depot is also used for events, so the museum season and what is on view matter when planning an indoor visit. The Depot Center publishes its current and previous exhibitions. If you are tracing the Yellowstone connection, use the station as the starting point for thinking about the difference between a railroad gateway town and the park itself. Livingston was where the arrangements for reaching the park became real for people arriving by train.
